FIRST PLACE

Micah Zappaterra, Grade 2 “I am a Friend”

“It is about how I am a friend and I matter because I am a friend. I was inspired because that is my best friend.”

Intermediate Division (3-5)

FIRST PLACE

Ezekiel (Zico) Hong, Grade 3 “I am Me and We are Different”

“This relates to the theme “I Matter Because” I am me and you are different from me. Every person is different from each other and that’s good.”

SECOND PLACE

Saki Roppongi, Grade 4 “I Matter Because of This”

“This poem relates to the theme because I am new in South Pasadena and I don't have many friends. The middle section describes my last home, New York. But as the poem says, I'm going to try to communicate more with my classmates, and change things.”

THIRD PLACE

Amelia Perry, Grade 3 “I Matter Because”

“I think my haiku really describes who I am. It fits the theme because it tells why I'm special and how I change the world.”

Rose Edwards, Grade 5 “I Can Make A Difference”

“My work is a reflective essay of why I think I matter.”

Lincoln Forbes, Grade 3 “I Matter Because"”

“My poem means I matter to me. I wrote my poem simple so the reader can decide what it means to inspire and change the world. I wrote it in a way that the meaning is hidden. I want my art to inspire others to make art too.”

Harriet Godson, Grade 4 “Free"”

“It is how I matter and how I feel free to be me.”
